Garage Door Openers
Garage door openers come in many different styles and each will have its strengths and weaknesses. The one thing that must be considered in selecting the door opener that you would purchase is the amount of load or lift that you will require of the opener. Wooden doors are the heaviest doors that door openers will be required to lift, unless you have a reinforced steel door.
Belt Drive Garage Door Opener
The belt drive opener is the quietest of the residential door openers. It has enough power to lift medium weight doors but should not be purchased to lift wooden doors or reinforced steel doors. Belt slippage is something that must be considered when selecting this type of door opener. Belts tend to fray after considerable use and will need to be replaced from time to time.
Screw Drive Garage Door Opener
The screw drive door opener is a bit stronger than the belt drive unit and will lift a wooden door with ease. Maintenance of the screw drive door opener will consist of using white lithium grease on the operating screw once per year in order to keep it running smoothly. Cold weather does not impact the screw type opener especially if it is well greased and maintained.
Chain Drive Garage Door Opener
The chain drive door opener is also a good choice. It is a bit louder than the belt drive or the screw drive units, but is able to lift any type of door you might have in your garage. Like the screw drive unit, white lithium grease is required for the chain about once per year. As the chain ages, one might have to adjust the tension in order to keep the door opening as it should.
